A 19-year-old building worker has been killed on a construction site in county Cavan. He had been working on piping at the site at Scotchtown in Ballyconnell, when the trench surrounding him collapsed shortly after half past two this afternoon. The man's death brings to four the number of construction workers who have been killed in site accidents across the country in the past seven weeks.
More than fifteen hundred building workers walked-off sites in Dublin earlier today in protest at the number of deaths in the industry. The march passed the Dáil, before moving on to the office of Labour Affairs Minister, Tom Kitt. The builders observed a minute's silence outside the offices of the employers' organisation, the Construction Industry Federation.
The Dublin Alliance of General Construction Operatives has accused the Government of failing to provide adequate resources and expertise to improve safety.
