New York carries out aerial assault on mosquitoes

At least three people have died in New York of the disease encephalitis, which is carried by mosquitoes. The city has now launched an aerial attack against the insects. Culex Pipiens, the common house mosquito, is a familiar sight in hot climates, but never a welcome one. Most mosquito bites result in minor irritations, but they can also carry more dangerous diseases. St. Louis encephalitis is currently causing panic on the streets of New York.

Three people have died from the disease, and at least nine more cases have been diagnosed. The virus is carried by birds. The mosquitoes bite the birds, and so the cycle begins. The bug lives in pools of polluted water and authorities are also searching for living specimens to determine how far the virus has spread. However, for the moment it seems all out war on mosquitoes is the best form of defence.
