A powerful hurricane, which hit the Texas coast with winds of up to 125-mile per hour early today, has died out in the sparsely populated ranch country. Texas' major populated areas in Texas avoided the damage that was feared yesterday. Hurricane Bret hit Texas midway along its southern coast, but the storm was weakened as it moved inland, according to the US National Weather Service.
The hurricane claimed its first victim in Colombia yesterday. One woman died and thousands of homes were also destroyed when it passed through the Caribbean. No casualties have yet been reported in the US, but evacuation has been ordered in certain areas. It is the strongest storm to have hit the state of Texas in 20 years. The State Director of Support, Bruce Bombit, says that they are still prepared for worsening conditions, as there is now a danger that major floods, caused by the hurricane, could cause problems.
