Police in Cornwall have said that fewer than a third of the number of people expected to visit the county to watch Wednesday's eclipse have so far arrived, and it is thought that bad weather forecasts will discourage others from going. Up to one and half million people had been expected, but it is estimated that only 450,000 have actually arrived. Britain's Met Office says thick cloud and rain are likely on Wednesday morning, and there is only a 20 to 30 per cent chance of seeing the event.
The eclipse has been arousing interest in Europe and Asia, where the sun will be blotted out by the moon in some places for just over two minutes. In Ireland, the south of the country is expected to have the most dramatic views. But people are being warned of the dangers of looking directly at the sun, because this can cause blindness.
