Farmers’ Association criticises beef plan

The leader of the farmers' association, Tom Parlon, has said that the National Beef Assurance Scheme is deficient in that it will not apply to supermarkets, or the catering and restaurant sectors. Legilsation to set up the scheme is expected before the end of the year. The scheme aims to protect farmers and consumers by providing assurances that Irish beef is safe, and to underpin confidence in the industry at home and abroad.

The legislation will draw together a range of existing laws to develop common high standards of production and processing. The scheme will involve a process of mandatory registration, inspection and approval covering all parts of the industry including farmers, marts, abattoirs, exporters and the trading sector.

The scheme will also strengthen the animal identification and traceability measures already in place. The Minister for Agriculture, Joe Walsh, said that it is essential that Ireland take a lead in demonstrating a responsible attitude to the production of food and a commitment to food safety.
