Mbeki elected to succeed Mandela as president

The South African parliament has elected Thabo Mbeki to succeed President Nelson Mandela. He will be sworn in on Wednesday when Mr Mandela formally retires. Mr. Mbeki is Mr. Mandela's nominee for the post, and has been his deputy for the past five years.

Thabo Mbeki has pledged himself to democracy and to fighting corruption within his own party, the African National Congress party.
