Coveney family return home after sailing round the world

The family of the late Deputy Hugh Coveney arrived back in Cork Harbour this morning after their circumnavigation of the world in aid of the Chernobyl Children's Project. They were accompanied by the Naval Service vessel, Aisling, and the Marine Emergency Helicopter flew overhead as a flotilla of local yachts gathered to welcome them at Roche's Point.

It has been announced that an orphanage in Belarussia is to be called the Hugh Coveney Centre in memory of the late Cork Dáil Deputy, in honour of his family’s work. They have raised £400,000 to help fund the construction of medical and day care facilities for the project.

At the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven there was a big crowd led by their mother, Pauline and including the Lord Mayor of Cork. The Minister for the Marine sent them a message of congratulation on behalf of the Government. Dr. Woods said that their epic 30,000 miles followed a tradition of Irish seafarers going back to St. Brendan.
