Mika Hakkinen had a stunning last lap to snatch pole position for tomorrow's Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo today. Hakkinen maintained his perfect qualifying record this season to seize the top spot on the grid from championship leader Michael Schumacher.
Hakkinen's McLaren team-mate David Coulthard also produced a late charge to take third place and wreck Ferrari's dreams of a one-two for the race. Eddie Irvine had to settle for fourth place with Stewart's Rubens Barrichello fifth. Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished sixth to outscore team-mate Damon Hill again. Hill finished in 17th place.
