The United Nations has warned that a scheduled vote on the future of East Timor may not go ahead because of mounting violence in the Indonesian-controlled territory. This follows reports that 25 people were massacred on Tuesday by pro-Indonesian forces.
Today, thousands of militia-men rallied in a show of force in support of Jakarta rule, responding to a call-to-arms from pro-independence guerillas. The UN ballot is seen as a step towards independence for the territory.
