Seven hundred jobs have been announced for Clonmel in South Tipperary. The California-based Guidant Corporation, which makes medical equipment, is to expand its plant in the former Seagate factory.
Guidant is to invest £31.5 million in producing coronary care equipment. The Taoiseach,Bertie Ahern, who met senior Guidant executives in California today has welcomed the expansion. It is the result of a major IDA-backed expansion of the Guidant medical products plant in the town. Mr Ahern finalised details of the investment at a meeting with executives of the company at their headquarters in California today.
The announcement comes as a major employment boost for a town which, less than two years ago, suffered a devestating industrial closure. Guidtant, which took over the former Seagate plant in Clonmel, is now expected to employ up to 1200 people.
