The US special envoy, Richard Holbrooke, has been holding talks with President Milosevic in Belgrade in what is seen as a last attempt to persuade the Yugoslav leader to endorse the Kosovo peace agreement.
Before the meeting, Mr. Holbrooke said that he was appealing to President Milosevic to avert a tragedy in the region. In Kosovo, renewed fighting has been reported between rebel forces and Serb police in the province.
