In Kosovo a Serb policeman is reported to have been killed and a second injured in an ambush by guerrillas on a patrol in the town of Krivovo. The Serb Information Centre said the guerrillas opened automatic gunfire on the police vehicle, which responded.
As tension mounts in Kosovo, Yugoslav troops are continuing military exercises in northern and southern Kosovo. UNHCR claimed today that the exercises are intimidating the local population and driving villagers from their homes. In a foreign policy speech delivered last night, US President Bill Clinton once again warned that NATO would act if Serbian troops launched an offensive against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.
Earlier, the head of the international monitoring mission in Kosovo, William Walker, warned that the fragile ceasefire in the province has all but broken down. There is mounting international concern over increased fighting between the Serb security forces and the Kosovo Liberation Army in the past week.
The United States and NATO have warned the Yugoslav President, Slobodan Milosevic, not to carry out any major offensive against the KLA before the resumption of peace talks in two weeks' time. However, despite continued fighting, William Walker said today that he remained optimistic about the role of the monitoring missions.
