Former IRA chief of staff Cathal Gouding has died in hospital in Dublin at the age of 75.
Mr Goulding was a socialist and republican and in recent years a member of the Ard Comhairle of the Workers Party. In the 1940s, he was interned in the Curragh for his republican activities, along with Brendan Behan.
Mr Goulding was active in the IRA campaign in England during the 1950s and was jailed for some years for his involvement in an IRA raid on a British army barracks.
On his return home he quickly became chief of staff of the IRA - before the split that led to the formation of the Provisionals. He is survivied by his wife Patty and son Cathal.
