Eighty European nationals evacuated from Sierra Leone

An Irish citizen is among eighty European nationals who've been evacuated from the west africation nation of Sierra Leone following an upsurge in fighting near the capital, Freetown.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said that EU embassy officials were cooperating to ensure that anyone wishing to be airlifted out could do so.

Two more British planes are due to arrive in Freetown later tonight.

The head of the West African peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone said the capital is now calm. However rebels claim to have taken three more towns and are advancing on the capital.
