US to make Chile documents public

The US government has said it will make public American documents relating to human rights abuses in Chile during the rule of General Augusto Pinochet.

However a State Department spokesman said the Clinton administration still did not have an opinion on the merits of the extradition case against the former military leader.

Last night General Pinochet was moved from the London hospital, where he had been convalescing, to an exclusive mansion in Wentworth in Surrey.

He remains on bail and is under police guard while he awaits a British decision on Spanish moves to extradite him.
