New drugs refund scheme announced

The Health Minister, Brian Cowen, has announced changes in the schemes for the subsidisation of the cost of prescribed medicines over a certain threshold.

These changes include raising the threshold above which reimbursement can be claimed. Mr. Cowen said the threshold had not been increased since 1991.

The Minister told the Dáil that, from March next, a new Drugs Refund scheme would allow families to reclaim the cost of medication from their health boards, once it exceeded £42 a month.
