From motivating the nation on Operation Transformation to hosting Ireland's Fittest Family, Kathryn Thomas's discipline is self-evident. But when it comes to her home life, she's no less focused and plans to be a strict parent to her daughter Ellie.

Drawing on her own memories of her own rowdy childhood, Kathryn is taking no chances with how those genes might be passed on. "I was a difficult teenager at times, myself. Equally, parents are just annoying when you’re 11 or 12," she said in an interview with VIP magazine.

"I’m going to be a strict parent and I already know that and I won’t be for turning with phones and nights out, because I know what I was like, and I know already I have a wilful girl on my hands."

Thankfully, her fiancé Padraig McLoughlin is fully onboard with this strategy, as  Kathryn said, "Padraig will be strict too". She accepts that cracking the whip and setting boundaries is necessary, and comes with some its fair share of tantrums, rows and crocodile tears. "I’m fully aware that Ellie will hate me, many times over", she said.

It's not all rules and boundaries, though, as Kathryn said her main wish for her little daughter is that she will learn the self-confidence and know-how to travel the world and experience as much as she can.

More than that, she said "I hope she’s strong and stands up for what she believes in. And I hope she’s not afraid to be herself".

Kathryn knows the joy of such self-belief, as she said, "I’ve never been afraid to be myself or speak my mind and I’ve always been pretty happy in my own skin, and to be able say that even is great".

With this kind of encouragement and discipline, who knows, maybe the Thomas-McLoughlins will make an appearance on Ireland's Fittest Family sometime in the future?
