Without an E63, the E53 AMG Hybrid is the top of the E-Class tree

The E53 AMG Hybrid may have a 2.4-tonne kerb weight and reduced boot space due to the hybrid battery but Mercedes have nicely managed the handling and extra weight. It's not as raw as the E63 was but fits in well in modern executive car parks.

It's the usual blend of luxury, performance and Mercedes technology with the added brawn of AMG. If you don’t pick up immediately on the added 'muscle’, there’s the red badging on the rear, air vents on the side and some nice tips on the quad exhausts to hint at the performance under the bonnet.

Gilmores Garage lent the vehicle to journalists for the purpose of review.
