BMW's new 1 Series will have front wheel drive and more interior space, based on initial launch details.

BMW has released camouflaged images of its new 1 Series, which is expected to be launched next year. The company says the car is the result of five years of development and testing, as it moves the car way from traditional rear wheel drive to front wheel drive. Compared to the current model, changes have been made to the chassis set up to improve driving dynamics.

As expected, the design of the car does not appear to have changed radically. It still has the elongated front and bonnet area that has characterised the car since its launch. However, we can expect some of the more chiselled design that now characterises BMW design in tandem with the more familiar design.

BMW says the company has "taken a major leap forward in terms of interior spaciousness". The front wheel drive layout means more interior space, especially for rear passengers.

Legroom for rear-seat passengers has increased by 33 millimetres and headroom at the back by 19 millimetres.  The boot capacity has been increased by 20 litres to 380 litres.

A new four cylinder features the most powerful 4-cylinder engine from the BMW Group with a 2-litre capacity and twin turbos. The power unit will have a 306 horse power output
