Volkswagen in Ireland has introduced a discount scheme to encourage drivers of older cars to trade-in. Cars need to be at least nine years old to qualify for the scheme, which knocks about €5,000 Euro off the price of an electric Golf.
The scheme offers owners of cars designated as being pre-Euro 5 ( emissions standards introduced in 2008 but covering some cars up to 2010) price discounts ranging from €1,000 for a new VW Up supermini to €5,000 for a Sharan people carrier.
In the case of an E-Golf, someone scrapping an older car can now benefit from this scheme and also from the SEAI grant of €5,000 and a VRT rebate for the same amount. This should reduce the price of the E-Golf to €31,770 - a long short from its full price of €45,995. Latest estimates for the range of the E-Golf are 230 about kilometres, depending on conditions.
VW has introduced such a scheme before but it did not cover petrol models. Now anyone with a petrol or diesel pre-Euro 5 can avail of the grant.
The trade-in vehicle needs to have been owned by the customer for at least six months.
Volkswagen has set up a special website - www.ecogrant.ie where owners can check if their current vehicle qualifies.
