In it's second major recall in two weeks, BMW is to address a potential fire risk in 3 Series models built between 2004 and 2011.
BMW confirmed this weekend that a second safety recall on 3 Series models is underway in the UK and Ireland. Some 300,000 cars are being recalled in the UK and several thousands cars in Ireland are also likely to be affected. The new risk has been identified as involving a cable connecting the battery to the blower fan, which can catch fire. The previous recall - involving some 10,000 cars in Ireland - also concerned a cable problem that could cause the car to stall abruptly. It involved 10,602 cars.
The 3 Series models affected were built between December 2004 and July 2011.
BMW Ireland says the new recall will be in tandem with the first recall. It does not yet know how many cars are affected by the latest recall and is currently working through registration numbers. A statement said: "BMW is currently working to ascertain the number of 3 Series models this will affect in Ireland and will begin the recall process in parallel with the existing recall. This involves replacing two wiring connections on the cars already affected. In doing so, we are taking every precaution in terms of safety, minimising disruption and inconvenience to affected customers."
