BMW is expected to launch its first all-electric SUV - based on the current i3 model - in about two years. It will have a range of 400 kilometres, the company says, and will re-charge on a fast charger in 30 minutes.
This is the first of several cars BMW will launch in the near future, powered by electricity only. The latest technology means that grouping together the electric motor, the gearbox and power electronics into one unit - instead of locating them separately - will allow for the unit to be easily fitted into other models that can be designed around it. The number of models that will be fitted with the technology will be "large".

Every BMW model will be available with electric or conventional power sources.
This includes current and future models and BMW aims to offer every model with a choice of petrol or diesel, hybrid or all-electric power sources. It should also be able to offer four wheel drive and higher and lower power outputs, as required. The concept iX3 has a power output of 286 horse power and the kind of acceleration we have come to expect of electric cars. The car is due to be built in China, a country switching rapidly to electric motoring because of pollution issues in cities.
BMW is also in the process of completing development of its M850 i coupe, its top of the range luxury sports car. Seen below during a testing programme in Wales, the car is due to go on sale this year.

The 850 comes with a V8 engine, advanced four wheel drive technology, integral active steering and professional roll stabilisation. A new rear axle transmission is said to provide "maximum traction" when accelerating out of bends.
