Current thinking in the motor industry is that owning a car will - at some point - be a thing of the past. Autonomous, connected and electrified, cars will do the thinking for us and become options we avail of rather than be enslaved by. Next week Jaguar will show a portable steering wheel that, it says, may be the only part of a car you will own in the future.

It features a high level of artificial intelligence and has been equated to Amazon's Alexa voice command device. The wheel is also voice-activated and will be capable of hundreds of tasks - not least the task of connecting you to an available car at a time you need it and for the length of time you need it. The wheel will become your "trusted companion", sourcing any car (not just a Jaguar or Land Rover) for your proposed journey.

All of the big car companies are looking at a future where people will only use cars as they need them and they will be provided on-demand. This concept is based on that kind of reality. The designers say that if you need to be at a meeting at 8:00 in the morning then you can ask the Sayer device to calculate the time you plan to get up, have a car autonomously driven to your home and off you go. It will even ask if there are parts of the journey you would like to drive yourself to remind you of the good old days.

And smartphone charge anxiety won't be the only thing you'll have to worry about then.
