BMW's new X3 goes on sale in November - in time for the 2018 number plate season.

The latest version of the X3 is due to go on sale in November - timed for 2018 registration plates - and, like a lot of German cars, the upgrade concentrates on technology and safety rather than any radical re-design of the exterior.

In fact, BMW has not even gone as far as other manufacturers who have made their cars wider, taller and longer. The new X3 actually retains the exterior dimensions of the outgoing model. However, the weight has changed and the car is now 55 kg's lighter.

Various styling touches have been employed to give the X3 a more modern look and there are changes in particular to the front grille and the front and rear lights with LED's being employed for both. BMW says the three trim variants of the car will have an "individual appearance". The xLine, which is expected to be the big seller in Ireland gets, for example a satin/aluminium radiator grille, more "rugged" front and rear bumpers, silver metallic side sills and 19" wheels. The xLine produces 190 horse power and costs €59,950.

Active cruise control and a system that corrects any lane straying caused by inattention or tiredness should be standard.

The interior has been described as ergonomically designed and driver focused. BMW also says the chassis has been tuned to ensure sporty handling at "a new level".
