Skoda Octavia prices to start at €19,750

With 55,000 Octavia's sold in Ireland since the car went on sale in 1998 - and many of them still running happily after big mileage - the Octavia has been Skoda's main model here. And for good reasons. It's reliable, value for money, has a huge boot and has proved itself to be a workhorse, not just for private use but for taxi drivers as well.

The new car is not all-new. It's what's called in the trade a "face-lifted" model. In other words it has been refreshed in the middle of its life cycle. There are changes to things like the grille, headlights, air inlets and bumpers but otherwise nothing major - we will have to wait some time for an all-new version. There is, however, some advanced technology to keep the car in touch with its competitors, so to speak.

The Smartlink+ smartphone integration system featuring Apple Car Play and Google Adroid Auto is now standard on all versions. There are various other options - depending on the grade of car - such as pedestrian protection function, a blind spot detector and a variety of on-line information options.

The estate version of the new Octavia

Irish pricing has been confirmed, with the Octavia Combi estate model available for an additional €1,000 over the hatchback.  The entry level price will be for the 1.2 petrol with 86 horse power. A more powerful 1.0 litre petrol, with 115 horse power, comes in at €21,095. The 1.6 diesel, a previously very popular choice with 90 horse power, starts at €22,895.
