Jeep may have lost ground to a raft of other crossover and four wheel drive offerings from virtually every other manufacturer - mostly because of affordability - but it is hoping to sway some buyers with a significant price drop.

The entry-level Cherokee 4X4 model now starts at €70,950 - a reduction of some €9,000 - but it is still a very pricey prospect and the smallest engine is a 3.0-litre unit. Jeep is claiming consumption of 5.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres for the unit but we will see what real-life driving reveals.

The new model has electric power steering, a start and stop system, which avoids drawing power from the engine and improves efficiency, 20-inch alloy wheels, black leather-trimmed upholstery and an 8.4-inch smart-touch navigation system.

The Cherokee will also come in two pricier versions with higher levels of equipment.
