BMW is providing 10 of its new i3 small electric cars for the scheme, which will be based initially in Dublin, in partnership with GoCar. The idea is that you can pay as you go or rent the cars short-term at ten city centre locations for €4.99 an hour between 08:00 and 20:00, or for €2.49 between 20:00 and 08:00 the next day.

BMW says the new i3 benefits from higher storage density in the lithium cells and will deliver a range of 201 kilometres "under everyday driving conditions" for drivers. It says the car has an output of 170 horse power and a 0 to 100 kilometres time of just 7.3 seconds.
The car has now gone on sale here with a starting price of €36,300. It is worth noting that, while BMW says the range has greatly improved, terms and conditions apply. The company says the range is "dependent on a variety of factors, above all personal driving style, street conditions, outside temperature and preheating".
Previous tests on electric cars have shown that factors such as the use of air conditioning, heated rear windows, infotainment systems and cold weather have quite a bearing on the range of the car.
The charging/collection points will be located at the following city centre locations in Dublin: Point Village, Mark Street, Merrion Square, Clifton House Fitzwilliam Lower, Greek Street, St Johns Road West, Ranelagh, Parnell Square, Earlsfort Terrace and South Lotts Road.
The scheme is operational now. Even if the scheme itself is not for you, it's a great opportunity to experience an electric car at a fraction of the purchase cost.
