Toyota has announced that its new smaller crossover - the C-HR - will have a starting price of €26,895, a shade above the base price for Nissan's Qashqai. This price will be for the entry level 1.2 petrol version, while the hybrid model with the same engine will cost €29,350.
Having been left behind in terms of the innovative design of competitors, such as Nissan with its Juke and the Qashqai, Toyota is set to launch a car that carries the burden of expectation. Will the new C-segment crossover - the C-HR - mark the departure for Toyota that its previous stage-managed appearances have suggested? We'll find out in November when the car arrives in dealers's showrooms.
A launch edition will be the first to arrive and that, in itself, suggests that Toyota is making a lot of noise about this new car. It will have extras such as 18" matte wheels; LED headlights; leather upholstery and a smart entry system.
The more conventional version will have a fairly impressive list of specifications, including Safety Sense technology; a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian alert; adaptive cruise control; lane departure warning and automatic high beams for the headlights.
Hybrid technology will be to the fore with the new car and the engine is a 1.8 petrol to accompany the electric motor.
It looks like a very smart car and one that will help Toyota shake off a rather fusty styling profile. It will need to as we move inexorably away from traditional car styling. The standard family saloon is fast becoming a thing of the past and crossovers have taken over.
Prices for the C-HR and a full list of standard equipment should be available later this month.
