BMW has executed its mission well with its GT versions and the latest incarnation of the 3 GT looks like it could carve out quite a niche for itself, price allowing. It goes on sale at €47,850 for the entry-level 2.0 litre, which is a bit of a leap for many, but it does offer more space and a sophisticated profile. Three full sized seats in the rear and "the legroom of a luxury saloon" are promised, as is a fuel consumption savings of up to 14 per cent.

Some tweaks have been made to the exterior - such as new twin circular headlights - and the interior, where buttons and switches have been given a high-gloss finish. There will be eight engine choices - three petrol and five diesel. All of the petrol models and two of the diesels (the 320 D and the 330 D) will have the option of xDrive all wheel drive. There will be a choice of six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearboxes.
