The engine has been designed to cut fuel consumption and emissions by 18% and has been responsible for a drift away from small diesel engines for many car buyers. This year it was able to travel some 1,878 kilometres on a single tank of petrol - that's an unprecedented 2.93 litres per 100 kilometres.
Ford won the best engine in the under 1.0 litre category for its EcoBoost engine for the fifth year in a row, while Audi won best in class for its 2.5 TFSI five cylinder engine.
