Due in late April, the latest Galaxy is still the full-size MPV to beat.
'Subtle' best describes the Mondeo-based Galaxy's mid-life makeover. The most interesting developments are under the bonnet and concern the two-engine range, with a new, smaller yet more powerful 2-litre 'ECOBoost' petrol engine joining the line up with 200bhp. Ireland will also get a revised turbo diesel that will be the big seller with Euro5 compliant emissions.
The exterior has, however, been freshened up, but there are no major panel changes. There is a user-friendlier roof rail system. The front end is more imposing, helped by additional chrome. The rear end can now benefit from a reversing camera that is integrated to the Sat Nav option.
Inside there is more standard equipment and a centre console redesign. Cabin acoustics have been improved with a thicker acoustic windscreen. Keyless entry and start is optional, so the Ford 'Power' button appears for the first time. Other things to note include the addition of optional softer leather seating choice and a new beige interior trim. There is also a new overhead console that runs lengthways between a panorama sunroof - similar to the option on Opel's 7-seat mid-sized Zafira MPV.
In general, materials have been improved upon, so Ford is keeping true to its claim that Galaxy is 'First Class Travel'. The touch screen Sat Nav system works well and there is a new Premium Audio option that adds an 18-litre subwoofer and two extra speakers. Unfortunately, Ford has not put enough 12 volt sockets up front for the driver and passenger to use.
Family buyers are perhaps even more aware of safety features and while Galaxy has ESP and a good crash rating, Ford has now added 'BLIS' as an option. This allows drivers to see in the side mirrors an amber indicator that illuminates if there is any traffic or obstacle in the mirror's blind spot. This is a system that we have seen in some Volvos and Mazdas recently. New also is ASLD, which is an acronym for the automatic speed limiter.
ECOBoost is a very interesting innovation. Ford has a team of 150 engineers working hard in Dunton in the UK making greener, more powerful Direct Injection petrol engines. Gone are the 2.5 and 3-litre petrol engines to be replaced by the new ECOBoost, tax band 'E', 200bhp four-cylinder direct injection unit. The Durotorque Diesel has been heavily revised also.
Galaxy is greener and more powerful and initially the Irish market will get the mid-powered 140bhp diesel version (Band 'C'), although three power outputs are available in the rest of Europe (115/140/160bhp). We tested the 160bhp we tested in the south of Spain recently and it had plenty of pulling power.
Galaxy is deceptively quick and refined and it is only when you are cornering you realise that you are in an MPV and not a sportier saloon! Another piece of good news: Ford has fitted the 'Easy Fuel' cap-less system that simply does not allow you to put the wrong fuel in the car as the incorrect nozzle will not fit.
Galaxy goes on sale in late April and will be available in Zectec, Ghia and Titanium specifications. I am quite sure it will continue to be the market leader.
