Munich has launched a vehicle that not only offers the security of a large SUV, but it’s bullet proof too!
The standard four-wheel drive X5 is a pretty intimidating machine and of course has a high commanding driving position that is much loved on the school run... but the Security goes that little bit further.
BMW is one of just a few car makers to build armored cars so when it comes to delivering that bit of added protection to the great and the good, the German firm is a favourite with politicians, VIPs and tycoons.
Beemer has been in the business of making secure vehicles for some 30 years. You won’t, however, find armour-plated cars in a standard car showroom; in fact many companies insist potential buyers go through a vetting process in order to get one and even then may only lease one to you.
The USA built X5 Security can accelerate to 100km/h from a standing start in just 7.5 seconds. Power comes from a 4.8 litre petrol V8 that the Greens would outlaw if they had the chance, as it is not only powerful but also entertaining to drive thanks to 475nm of torque and 355bhp. All the goodness of BMW’s clever 'under-bits' that make the standard X5 one of the most competent on road SUVs are present in the Security. So while the car may have tank-like characteristics, it doesn’t handle like one.
When it comes to making a car more attack resistant, there are many levels you can go to from using bulletproof glass to converting it into a tank! The X5 Security meets the VR4 ballistic protection level so the passenger and boot areas are armoured, as is the glass.
When tested the vehicle was shot at with a range of handguns from the famous .44 Magnum (Dirty Harry) to 9mm Lugers (every movie villain) and from multiple angles also before it was certified. Unlike armoured cars of old, that were filled with heavy plate metal, the X5 Security uses the latest technology in fibre-reinforced material that is lightweight and capable of stopping bullets.
Good old steel is of course still used in addition at various places that are more vulnerable to specific attack. The windows are 22mm thick and have an additional polycarbonate layer to prevent the glass from shattering. The boot can carry anything in bulletproof comfort thanks to a two part armoured boot lid. Should your tyres get shot out the car has run-flats.
The X5 Security has a few great gadgets like a front and rear camera system to monitor external activities as well as an intercom system that allows the occupants to chat to the outside world and any would be attackers or even their friends - "Thanks, great party see you soon!"
BMW offers a tailoring service with all its Security vehicles, so you can get a vehicle that suits your needs perfectly and remember if 007 was happy with his 7 series who’s going to argue.
So if you’re a paranoid pop star, tycoon or Lotto winner with a long list of enemies, the X5 Security is the car for you. BMW will even teach you how to drive it if you wish!
