Land Rover has stuffed a host of new technological features into the third generation Disco, like its patented 'Terrain Response', first seen in the Storm concept.
This system delivers maximum performance with excellent road manners. There are five terrain settings to choose from (two for road and three for off-road).
Gone is the exterior-mounted spare wheel; also gone is the ladder chassis much loved by off-road purists. It is replaced by what Land Rover calls an 'integrated body frame'.
Like my old Citroen DS, the adaptive headlights swivel with the steering wheel. Engines will include a V8 4.4 petrol (yummie) and a rather tasty V6 2.7-litre turbo diesel.
With seven seats and a split tailgate, the new Discovery promises to catch up with the best in its class, if not blast past them.
