The 16th series of beloved gardening competition Super Garden has returned to our screens on RTÉ One, with this week's episode introducing viewers to designer Debbie Brophy.
Based in Kildare, but originally from Laois, Debbie grew up with green fingers thanks to her parents, both of whom were keen gardeners.
Having studied Fine Art Painting at Limerick School of Art, Debbie always had a creative flair, but says she never channelled her "full potential" as an artist.
In recent years, she was working full-time in a fabric shop and realised that she missed creating her own designs.
Aged 41, she decided to go back to school and managed to complete her postgraduate diploma with the Garden Design Academy, all while raising her young daughter, Poppy.
At present, she is doing a bit of garden maintenance and is selling hanging baskets, a business born out of the pandemic when she started to sell indoor plants online.
With Super Garden, she hopes to fulfil her creative potential while also becoming an inspiration to Poppy.
If she wins, she will be given the chance to showcase her winning design at Ireland's largest gardening festival, where over 100,000 visitors will have the chance to see their winning design brought to life, joining the ranks of Ireland's top garden designers.
In order to be in with a chance to win a spot at Bloom, Debbie has been challenged to create a 'nature-friendly garden' for young family Anju, Jaison and three-year-old Steve.
The homeowners are busy working parents who have asked for a family garden that is low maintenance and suitable for their young son to have friends over to play in.
Debbie hopes to impress the judges (and the homeowners) with her 'bee happy' wildlife garden, inspired by a honeybee colony that moved into her own garden last year.
To bring the theme to life, she designed a series of hexagonal flower beds, filled to the brim with pollinating plants to attract bees and butterflies. Paving at the front of the garden will give the family a space to entertain, while the back will feature an all-weather pergola where they will enjoy the sounds of a beautiful water feature.
Of course, all of this is easier said than done, and Debbie hit a number of obstacles during her build.
In the end, Super Garden judges Monica Alvarez was quick to complimet the designer's artistic flair and use of colour, but Brian Burke was critical of the last-minute grass placement.
Thankfully, and most importantly, the family were thrilled with the results and said Debbie "nailed it".
