She was the distinct voice behind hits like Proud Mary and The Best, but singer Tina Turner also became known for her on-stage fashion.
Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, the singer, who died aged 83 on Wednesday, donned some iconic – and very glittery – looks over the years, and became synonymous with rock and roll.
These are some of her most memorable fashion moments…
The early years
In perhaps one of the earliest iterations of the now commonplace ‘naked dress’, Turner dared to bare her figure in a sheer sparkly moment, with long, draping sequin strands.
Although the singer cemented herself as a sex symbol in pop culture over her illustrious career, Turner herself never seemed to warm to the title.
"When the women sat there and gave me that side-look that they didn't like me, I was attractive for the men, I think, at that time. I thought, 'I have to find out how to get those women on my side... I was trying to say 'I'm here for you... not just for the men,'" she told Gayle King on CBS' Sunday Morning in 2018.
The Bob Mackie years
Worn by Cher, Turner, and Beyoncé, Bob Mackie's now infamous flame dress has become synonymous with stardom, and its glittering silhouette is one of Turner's most well-known looks.
Speaking with The Cut, Mackie explained that the dress - which became a big hit with gay audiences in San Francisco- came about when Turner went solo and commissioned him to build a wardrobe specifically for her.
Three years later, Lynda Carter asked Mackie to re-create the dress for a TV special where she performed Proud Mary. Later, when Beyoncé did a tribute to Turner at the Kennedy Center Honors she also wore the version that Mackie had given Carter.
The dress will feature in the V&A exhibition Diva, celebrating the "power and creativity of iconic performers" starting in June.
Bob Mackie has enjoyed a long-running relationship with iconic singing sensations.
In 1977, the designer was working on Cher's wardrobe for The Sonny and Cher Show when Turner appeared as a guest. The designer had made a dress meant to resemble flames for Cher, so he made an identical one for Turner. See above.
"She'd go to these little French dress boutiques and she would buy something and then she’d try to screw around with it and make it into a costume," Mackie told The Cut.
One of Mackie’s most memorable outfits featured pleated lamé wings and fringe chains.
Reflecting on the outfit in her memoir, That's My Life, Turner wrote: "I looked like I was about to take flight and soar — which was exactly how I felt about being on my own for the first time."
The mane event
Turner’s hair was allegedly overbleached in the Sixties and from then, she often wore wigs.
Her iconic, wild, voluminous look became well known, and in her memoir, she commented that she was often nervous entering into new relationships with men, because of how they would see her wig.
Photographed above, Turner appeared alongside Elton John in Wogan's first show, sporting a very Eighties hairdo, huge earrings and a silky top, as she laughed and joked with the entertainer.
The Legs
As well as her extraordinary voice, the powerhouse performer was known for her dance moves and her particularly striking legs.
"Sometimes I think I'm as famous for my legs as much as my voice," she told The Sun.
"I only had my legs on show so much as it made it much easier to dance," added the singer, who reportedly insured her pins for $3.2 million.
The Legs singer made sure to wear clothes on-stage that would allow her to dance to her best ability with an endless stream of stunning mini dresses and skirts.
It is even rumoured that Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger - who is now famous for his moves on stage - asked Turner to teach him how to dance.
The two performed together at Live Aid in 1985, when Jagger decided to pull the skirt from Turner's outfit while on stage.
Recalling the incident in her memoir, Turner wrote: "Mick and I could never just stand there and sing—that wasn't us. We had to do something. He looked me over. I was wearing a tight-fitting black leather top and skirt and I could see a naughty idea forming. 'Does that skirt come off?' he asked slyly. 'What?’ was my startled reply."
Although Turner was familiar with Jagger, she wrote that she was understandably "a little nervous":
"Luckily, I was prepared […] If my skirt came off there was nothing to see but a costume under a costume. I was covered, I reassured myself."
All that glitters
Metallic materials, bold patterns, leather looks, sequins, tassels and beads were a staple for Turner throughout her career,
In 2009, Turner took to the stage in Dublin in an angular gold top with a chevron pattern, and sparkling cut-offs with shining stilettos showing her truly glamorous style and ability to keep up on stage.
Despite her many years of glitz and glamour, though, a simple blue denim jacket has cemented itself in fashion history thanks to the singer wearing it in her What's Love Got To Do With It? music video.
Queen Bees
At the 2008 Grammys, Beyonce channelled her fellow music icon, as the pair took to the stage, with Turner donning silver leggings and a tight corset with a short ‘do.
In a tribute to the late star on her official website, Beyonce wrote "My beloved queen. I love you endlessly."
