The ninth season of Home of the Year will champion creativity and showcase clever design and individuality, leaving judges Hugh Wallace, Amanda Bone, and Sara Cosgrove to make the tough calls in order to crown one overall winner.
The series will feature homes located all over Ireland and will include re-imagined semi-detached homes, renovation projects, architectural homes, restored period homes, and new builds.
Every Tuesday for the next eight weeks, the trio will explore 21 outstanding homes from across the country, featuring a beautiful variety of homes from Cork, Mayo, Kilkenny, Dublin, Down, Wicklow, Meath, Antrim, Galway, Armagh, Derry, and Kildare.
This week on the show, viewers were given a peek inside three beautiful homes...
Peter and Eileen McGuigan
Peter and Eileen McGuigan live in an Edwardian home in Belfast along with their two young sons.
The family moved into the property in August of 2019 knowing it needed modernising and that it would be a big renovation project. Creating a sense of light throughout the home was of great importance to the couple, leading them to use a roof light in the extension to get natural light into the back of their home which was also purposely angled to capture the westerly sun in the evening.
For the front of the house, they wanted to maintain as much of the original features as possible, but the extension was about creating something solid and embracing their love for brutalist architecture with the polished concrete floor and the concrete steps and the wrap-around concrete bench.
Brutalist architecture is a style that emerged in the UK during the 1950s, in the post-war era, leading to minimalist constructions that are artistically sculptural, with an emphasis on materials, textures and construction.
The McGuigans love the home they've created and describe it as a place that is strong and striking yet fun and a joy for their family to live in.
Seán and Róisín Cummins
Seán and Róisín Cummins live in a new build home in Co. Kilkenny with their three young sons.
The couple built the house on land belonging to Seán's dairy farm, and designed the home, along with Seán’s brother, Mark, in order to blend into the landscape. For the interiors, Róisín chose a bohemian-style to make the surroundings feel understated, comfortable and functional - a true reflection of their family.
For this family, building the home has been a labour of love and to be now living in their dream home, fills them with a real sense of accomplishment.
Vickey and Oliver Nolan
Architect Oliver Nolan and his wife Vickey, a wellness business owner, live in a modern new-build in Co. Meath with their daughter, Leia, and their dog, Gino.
They bought the site in April 2020 with a plan to build their family home. Oliver designed the house to match the couple's lifestyle and with a vision of clean and modern lines throughout. The couple had a lot of help from family, in particular Vickey’s father who worked on all the cladding of the home and was a great source of support to the couple as they embarked on the huge undertaking of building their dream home.
The couple love their master bedroom which has glass skylights, an up and over window and a stand-alone bath.
Oliver and Vickey's home is their sanctuary, they love that they were involved with every part of it and how it’s everything they could have ever wanted, and more.
