Suzy Griffin caught up with skincare and beauty expert Mark Rogers to discuss his top tips and tricks.
Mark Rogers has been RTÉ Today's resident beauty expert for over 14 years, He makes beauty and skincare fun and easy with his highly entertaining (and sometimes acrobatic) Instagram reels.
Mark is always first to know about the next beauty trend, so that's exactly what I asked him about.
What has been your favourite new beauty trend this season?
I am always on the hunt for a new beauty trend and especially one we can do from home for free. I am currently obsessed with an ice facial. Simply add ice cubes in a bowl of water dip your face in for 20-30 seconds. Repeat 3 or 4 times.
The benefits are endless. It reduces inflammation, refines pores and takes down puffy eyes. I do it every second day and have noticed such an improvement on inflammation. It's also a great way to wake yourself up in the morning if you are feeling a little sleepy. I found so many of these home beauty hacks when we were on lockdown and have kept the really good ones. This is one of my absolute favourites.
You're always first to know about the best new products on the market, if we wanted to treat ourselves to one new thing for our makeup bag this year, what would you suggest?
My beauty obsession could be considered a problem. I love trying new products and love to see brands innovate and find new ways to help people overcome their beauty dilemmas. If it solves a problem and it’s easy to use then it gets a gold star from me.
If you want to treat yourself to something you will get good use out of then I would suggest maximising your summer skin with Tint and Glow by Sculpted by Aimee, it will bring your glow to the next level. It’s also something you will wear everyday and get great use out of. I hate seeing beauty products sitting at the bottom of a drawer.
Another great investment would be a Charlotte Tilbury's lipstick. You can slam it on in two minutes and instantly feel a little more glam. For me, my current favourite shades are Glowing Jen & Bitch Perfect.
What's the one trend do we all need to get on board with this summer?
Ok first things first, we need to ditch the full coverage foundation and let your skin skin through. Glowing glossy skin is the essence to youthful healthy skin, I have swapped my foundation for Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter which brings my skin to life.
Now I struggle with some redness in my skin and also have terrible dark circles, so I add a touch of Bright On concealer from Benefit under my eyes. It’s a serum like formula so it doesn’t sit in fine lines.
With a little touch of Scultpted by Aimee’s Cover Up concealer on my red cheeks, I have the coverage where I need it but the rest of my skin looks light and glowy.
You're currently answering this while lounging by the pool, what are your summer beauty essentials? We want to know what's in your makeup bag!
I have swapped my usual huge make up bag for a nice cold drink by the pool this week. I don’t get a tan on holidays as I am SPF obsessed so I need my Benefit Hoola Bronzer to give my skin the illusion of sun-kissed skin.
I am also blush obsessed this summer. The new Willa Blush from Benefit is a gorgeous desert rose shade. I pop a little on my cheeks and a tiny amount across the bridge of my nose for that summer sun look.
From all your years working in beauty, what's the one trick you wish we would all learn?
Everyone needs to throw away their tweezers and leave the brow shaping and sculpting to a professional. I personally am still suffering from post traumatic tweezing disorder from the 90s . I plucked and I plucked till there was nothing left. I have learnt my lesson and leave them to my brow expert.
Your skin always looks incredible, you are glowing on our screens every week! Spill your favourite skincare secrets immediately.
My skin regime is changing all the time. I spend a lot of time looking at my skin and changing what it needs. I might have had a few glasses of champagne on the weekend and therefore need to up my Hyaluronic and drink more water. Life is about balance right?
I use so many skincare products but I keep a steady base with my Skingredients Skin Veg and Skin Shield SPF. I keep the Avene Thermal Water Spritz on my desk and spritz at stressful periods throughout the day!
I also use an LED light mask device from Haumea about three times a week. It has three different coloured LED lights. The yellow helps with hydration, red helps rejuvenate and refine fine lines, and wrinkles and the blue light is antibacterial. The key element is looking at your skin and assessing what it needs .
We love watching your Instagram for beauty tips and tricks, but who are your favourite beauty influencers?
Oh, I have so many, how do I choose? My good friend Lisa Potter Dixon is probably my absolute favourite. She has worked in the beauty industry for a really long time so she knows what she is talking about but most importantly she is super genuine, honest and such good fun.
I also obsessed with American influencers Laura Lee and Manny MUA. I recently met them in Hawaii and they were so nice and insanely beautiful.
Finally, you've told us the beauty trick we all need to know now tell us the biggest makeup mistake you wish we would all stop making.
The over-lining of lips needs to stop, people! We have taken it too far. There is an acceptable amount we can over-line but as a nation we have gone past that and then some.
