How organised is your fridge?

Fitness expert Karl Henry and Home Economic teacher Agnes Bouchier Hayes joined Claire Byrne on RTÉ Radio 1 to discuss how to best organise your fridge.

Do you follow the golden rules of fridge storage? Fruit on the middle shelf, vegetables in the drawers, and eggs - apparently - should never be kept on the door.

According to self confessed storage obsessed Karl Henry, a well organised fridge - with each item of food designated to a reusable container - can transform both your wallet and your wellness.

"It looks nice, I know what's in it," says Karl. "It reduces my food spend, it reduces my food waste and it sets you up for the week."

Commending Karl on his Home Economic skills, Agnes Bouchier Hayes says that glass containers are a sensible and sustainable way to store food.

Her real interest, though, lies in where everything sits in the fridge.

According to Agnes, placement is everything, with a recent study showing that by keeping foods such as pre-washed lettuce in the correct area of the appliance, you can extend its lifespan.

"Your fridge takes about 7% of your overall electricity bill," she explains. "It's on 24 hours a day, every day of the year so how you use it and where you put things will have an impact."

Agnes recommends keeping salad leaves near the evaporator (usually on the bottom of the fridge) where its coolest.
