Lonely Hearts: Meath pub seeks dates for their regulars

Jennifer Zamparelli chats with Liam Farrell about how a pub in Meath is trying to help lads find love on Valentine's Day.

Sitting outside of the Swans of Curragh Pub in Co. Meath is a large sandwich board with the message: Lonely Hearts. Farmer. I have road frontage, 40 milking cows, living with mammy. Seeks a wife 20 to 60-ish, must be a Meath supporter, willing to cook and clean, must be able to muck out and handle a bull and drive a tractor flat out.

Who says romance is dead?

Liam insists that the romantic call-out isn't for himself but for the regulars sitting in the bar. These older gentleman, he says, wouldn't be the type to sign up for online dating ("two of the boys don't even have mobile phones") so they rely on the craic of the pub to meet women.

Over the various lockdown, of course, the men were totally cut off from their social scene. In a bid to get things moving again, Liam and the team at Swans bar went above and beyond for their patrons with the eye-catching sign.

"On Monday we got a heap of replies, to be honest with you," Liam told Jen. "Yesterday morning the post man arrived in with another seven or eight letters."

If the match-making bar staff manage to find some winners among the applications, they hope to invite them to meet their regulars at a special Valentine's event.

Tinder, eat your heart out.
