Carl Mullan goes up against Stephen Byrne in craft challenge

Get ready to be inspired because it's Arts and Crafts Week on RTÉ Player, and with that comes a brand new series of videos from 'Craft Queen' Mary Fitzgerald.

Many will remember Mary from How do you do?, a children's series that had kids across Ireland making everything from space ships to dolls' houses using empty toilet rolls and egg cartons.

To celebrate the show landing on RTÉ Player, Mary will be challenging some grown-ups to compete in 'Get Crafty' challenges. Today, Carl Mullan will be up against fellow 2FM colleague Stephen Byrne as they attempt to make windmills.

Want to play along at home?

Here's what you'll need:

  • Paper/Card
  • Thumbtacks
  • Glue (optional)
  • A straw/stick
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Method:

Begin by cutting out a square piece of paper/cardboard. Approximately 7 inches by 7 inches.

Draw a line from the top left corner of the square to the bottom right corner. Repeat this step, drawing another line from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. You'll be left with an X on your card, which will help you determine the centre point.

From the centre point, using your ruler make a mark approximately 2 inches along each line.

Cut along the line from each corner to each of the marks you've made.

Using a thumb tack, make a hole in the top right-hand corner of each segment, rotating the card each time to make it easier to decipher the correct corner to place the hole.

Make another hole in the centre point of the card.

Take 1 thumb tack and place it through the hole in one of the segments. Grab hold of the next segment and fold it across until the thumb tack goes into the second hole. Repeat for each segment. When all 4 segments are connected to the thumb tack, put the thumbtack with all 4 corners attached through the hole in the centre.

On the other side of the hole, stick the thumbtack into a straw/pencil (or anything similar) to hold it up.
