Right now, we are being asked to stay at home and keep our distance from one another in order to stay safe.
This act of social distancing is extremely difficult for all of us because of our strong sense of community, and it can leave people feeling lonely and isolated at a time when we really need each other.
In response to this, RTÉ's #ShineYourLight / #LonraighdoSholas campaign asks that we, as a country, come together in this time of darkness to shine a light in our homes and show that light really can reach us all.
Light is a source of warmth, hope and vision. 💡

In a time of darkness it can be hard to see.
This Saturday at 9pm, #ShineYourLight safely wherever you are and show that light can reach us all. pic.twitter.com/T194yIpdZY
You can take part at 9pm on Saturday, April 11, by shining a light that can be seen from your home in solidarity with all the people who are sick, those who have lost their lives and the loved ones who remain, reminding us that love and hope are always with us.
In the video above, Go Outside and Play presenter Carl Mullan demonstrates how to create a light piece using just a hanger and some Christmas lights.
If you're not feeling particularly crafty, you can take part by flashing your house lights, using the torch on your phone, a disco ball, a lamp, fairy lights, or LED candles.
If you decide to use place a candle in the window, always use an appropriate candle holder, place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface and never leave it unattended.
