There are probably very few among us who have never been wowed by a superhero. Some of us marveled at scientist Bruce Banner’s metamorphosis into the Incredible Hulk or Peter Parker’s mutation into Spiderman - or Colonel Steve Austin, portrayed by actor Lee Majors, rebuilt as The Six Million Dollar Man.
It seems that we are enduringly fascinated with ordinary folk who been imbued with extraordinary powers. But now scientists have figured out how to confer a superpower, and have given ordinary rodents the ability to see in the dark.

Professor Michael O'Keeffe is Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Mater Private Hospital and Beacon hospital, and he joins Derek to explain more. Listen back above.

Professor Tian Xue from the University of Science & Technology of China and Associate Professor Gang Han from the University of Massachusetts' Medical School, lead the groundbreaking work which may eventually lead to infrared vision among humans.
