Curate your clutter

In every home, there are some things you want on display and others that you'd prefer to banish to a cupboard or drawer, away from prying eyes.

Atkin and Thyme have elegant shelving units that tap into the trend for open storage.

The Talbot unit is crafted from mango wood with a contrasting cast iron frame, €575. Perfect for displaying homewares, potted plants and books, it can also act as a room divider in an open-plan space.

If you want more privacy for your precious items, the Chakra shelving unit, also made from mango wood, €690, combines open shelving with closed-door cupboards. Two beautiful investment pieces for your home.

Heavy metals
hile our love of wood furniture continues unabated, it's easy to forget how fresh minimalist metal furnishings can look – not to mention their durability. Punched is a new lifestyle brand that combines curves with crisp clean lines. Tables (from €515) are custom-made from steel and so versatile, as they can be placed indoors or outdoors, and are sturdy enough to work as extra seating.

Shelving from UK-based metal design company AnthologyFive starts at €90 and is made from robust but lightweight aluminum so creates minimal pressure on your walls – you can even mount a shelf as a free floating desk. Available in a variety of colours, or request a bespoke colour at anthologyfive.com.

How do you take yours?

Have you ever dreamed of waking up to a freshly made coffee without even poking your head out from under the covers? That was what product designer Joshua Renouf had in mind when he re-imagined that '70s classic, the Teasmade, but the Barisieur Alarm Clock Coffee Machine has taken bedside beverages into 21st-Century artisan coffee territory.

When he was still in university. Renouf posted his ideal on Kickstarter (with an ambitious target of more than €400,000), and soon the Barisieur went viral. After a meeting with Richard Branson, his design went into production and it can now be found in upmarket hotel chains like Ace and the Four Seasons, or you can buy one for yourself for €449 (barisieur.com).

While the Barisieur's alarm function is standard (volume up/volume down) the brewing part has been rated 5/5 by some top tea and coffee connoisseurs. It even keeps the milk cool and fresh overnight, before brewing at the optimum temperature of 94°C to create the perfect morning wake-up call – the smell of fresh coffee!
