What is a polar front? Audrey McGrath explains

To celebrate Science Week, the RTÉ Weather team are sharing some fun facts about - you guessed it - the weather! In the video above, Audrey McGrath introduces us to Ireland's polar front.

A polar front is an area where cold polar air mass meets warm tropical air masses.

In Ireland, the polar front is the dividing line between the warm air coming up from the tropics and cold air moving down from the Arctic region.

The line where these two air masses meet results in "very active weather systems developing" including a lot of rain!
