News at One has two women at the helm, but both Claire Byrne and Aine Lawlor tell Janice Butler that what happens outside the studio is just as important to them. Get a sneak peek of their front cover RTÉ Guide interview below.
Speaking of the influx of female broadcasters, Aine believes it’s just about reflecting the world.
"I’m delighted to see it’s happening at last."
"I’d like to see more diversity other than gender, but what I think is great about the women colleagues that are broadcasting now is that first and foremost, they are top-class journalists and presenters with great futures and it’s a privilege to work alongside them," she says.
As for Claire, she says she has never experienced gender bias during her career, but she admits that it gets harder to have it all when you have children.
"Maybe I’m blinkered, but I’ve never come up against people having issues with me being a woman in my job.
"I just get on and do it.
"But it does get tougher when you have children, there’s no point pretending that it doesn’t or that having it all is an easy thing."
"It’s not, it’s really tough but you have to keep going," she says.
