Last night, hosted by Gráinne Seoige and Aidan Power, the 43rd People of the Year Awards took place in  Dublin's Mansion House.

Every year, the emotional ceremony aims to honour the best amongst us - the everyday heroes in Ireland and abroad.

Nominated by the public, the award winners are chosen by a panel of judges - this year's panel included Snapchat star, James Patrice. We caught up with the influencer to find out how he found the process.

"It's really difficult to choose anyone because honestly, as cliché as it might be, they are all winners. They've all done incredible work for their community, for people that are close to them and they've all done very different things but they're all so equal in measure and worth, so it was quite tough."

This year, the ceremony shone a spotlight on Fr Peter McVerry for being the voice of homelessness; Catherine Corless for her research into Tuam mother and baby home; the Irish Coast Guard, especially the crew of Rescue 116 and Caitríona Lucas, for their bravery; Joy Neville and Galway Senior Hurlers for Sports Person of the Year.

The winners of the 43rd People of the Year Awards were announced live on RTÉ One last night but you can watch it back on RTÉ Player now.
