In 2017, a young man by the name of Milo McCarthy was awarded the award for Young Person of the Year.

At 11-years of age, Milo raised nearly €18,000 for Syrian refugees by busking in Cork City and his hometown of Midleton. You can watch the video of him receiving his award above.

We caught up with impressive Corkonian to find out how life has been since the event.

Milo, tell us about your POTY nomination.
I raised €18,000 for the migrant crisis back in Syria and I did it by busking on the streets of Cork City every Wednesday and Saturday.

I was really young at the time, I think I was 11 when I started. As a young child, just to look at... do you remember the picture of Alan Kurdim on the beach in Turkey?

As a young boy looking at a picture of another young boy who was exactly the same as me - it was just by luck that I wasn't in his position.

Beaches are places for kids to play and build sandcastles - that's what I was doing when I was his age but I saw a picture of him lying dead on a beach and it just really touched me.

There's a lot of people out there who say 'oh, it's sad' and they feel bad for them but I wasn't going to sit there and let that happen so I just decided to do my part and it wasn't that difficult - everyone can do their own part.

I contributed just a small bit to the overall picture and I think everyone should do it.

What has life been like since the awards?
Well since then, I've had a great respect for the things around me that a lot of other people don't have like how we're very lucky to be surrounded by the luxuries that we're surrounded by and that we take for granted.

I know everybody says that. Everybody says that and you kind of think that it's just another person saying that but it really is true. It literally is just luck that we're not in their position.

Are there people in your life that have inspired you to keep doing such amazing things?
Well, my dad is a great encourager. I obviously had the idea that I really, really, really needed to do something, in my head, but he kind of steered me in the right direction.

Do you know what you want to do when you grow up?
I have a few vague ideas, I think I would like to be a journalist. I watch the news and read the newspapers sometimes, I like to be included in current events.

The People of the Year Heroes will be revealed on RTÉ One on Sunday, April 15 at 9:45pm.
