RTÉ broadcaster Stephen Byrne is re-sitting his Leaving Certificate. Joining Ryan Tubridy this morning, Stephen told Ryan that ten years ago when he was studying for the leaving cert, he 'rejected education in a way'.

Speaking of having recently started working in RTÉ he knew that his priorities were in a different place 'my interests and motivations were elsewhere'.

Looking back to his fifth year, Stephen told Ryan that he was bullied that year and had told his parents that he had wanted to leave school, struggling with not being able to admit to both himself and his class that he was gay.

'I was becoming a bit of a joke in my class... just becauseI was good at English there was these big jokes every single class that the teacher was in love with me, that was playing on my own insecurities about my sexuality and people finding out and it made me just want to get the hell out of there'.

Stephen moved schools by the time sixth year came around, and he admits to not allowing him to settle there either. Just before the Leaving Cert, Stephen came out as gay.

He is now filming a documentary following his year studying for the leaving certificate which will be aired in the Autumn on RTÉ.

But when it came to receiving his results the first time around, Stephen admits that he never opened his results, 'I stuck them in a shredder'.

"I knew I'd let myself down. I knew I hadn't done the best that I could. I was straight As up to my Junior Cert. I knew I'd let my parents down'.

"I just wanted to put it that in a box and shut it away and not even confront it"

Why resit the Leaving Certificate? Stephen told Ryan that he's enjoying Maths, and says it's all down to the teacher, 'if you have a good teacher you are so fortunate'.

Through all of this, Stephen is still working on RTÉ 2FM and traveling to London while studying and going to classes at night Monday to Friday.

His mocks are next week, and himself and Ryan joked about the 6th year holiday, 'you're going to Magaluf' Ryan told him.
