With autumn now in full swing, Team GAFF - presenters and stylists of The Good Room with the RTÉ Player - are taking a look at the homeware trends that dominate this season.
It’s time to embrace darker evenings, cooler days and all that is cosy and comforting; Caroline and Jo’s favourite time of year. Here, we look at the key interiors trends for A/W17 and the ways in which you can make them work with your chosen Moda palette.
No winter wardrobe is complete without its fair share of chunky woollen knits, and this year, the same goes for your soft furnishings. There are lots of ways to embrace this trend, be it a woven tapestry to hang on your wall, a cable knit ottoman or footstool, a luxurious chunky knit throw or a series of woollen cushions.
Nothing creates a richer and more inviting environment than a mixture of fabrics and textures.
With all room makeovers, we start with colour. If you’re leaning towards Mineral Glow, for example, and you opt for the intensity of Gatsby Blue or Tilbury Teal on your wall, try bringing the other palette colours - such as French Mists - through in your soft furnishings.
A cool grey cable knit throw will serve to balance the vibrancy of the walls.
If, on the other hand, you opt for Coastal Calm, choosing the likes of Renaissance and Robin Egg as your feature wall paint, consider embracing the Salinger colour - with its hint of mustard - in a mustard knit ottoman. An instant cosy update to add a little autumn/winter to the Moda palettes that work year round.
Last year, when it came to wall prints, it was all about typography. This season, we’re moving away from words and embracing maps in a big way. It might be a vintage style globe that sits on a console table or a series of prints with contemporary graphic maps of your favourite places.
There are options aplenty to choose from online and from Irish interiors shops such as Article and Designist. Thinking of some wall art to complement your Him + Her palette? As there’s already lots of warmth in the likes of Foxglove, keep the colours in your maps neutral.
Same goes for True Romance as there’s plenty of vibrancy in Electric Lime or Enamoured. If, however, you lean towards Backdrop (a stunning grey within the Him + Her palette) on your walls, pops of neon can work wonderfully against this.
Gatsby style pieces
At this point, you might have had your fill of mid-century inspiration, but the roaring twenties is starting to earn itself pride of place among interiors trends for 2017. This moves us somewhat away from the warm woods and in the direction of the kind of style you’d find in The Great Gatsby.
So, get set to embrace all that’s metallic and mirrored for autumn. This means glass trays on which your candles will reflect beautifully, all kinds of mirrors - window mirrors are hugely popular - and a newfound appreciation for the greys and silvers that last year’s brass had pushed out of the picture.
The best thing about this trend is its neutrality, meaning it will work wonders with whichever Moda palette you choose.
One of the most contemporary iterations of 1920s style is a vintage drinks cabinet.
Keep it pared back and classy, choosing Gatsby style champagne glasses which can be styled on top with crystal decanters. A chrome drinks trolley will be hugely enhanced by a backdrop of Subtle Glamour’s Frosted Fig or, more fittingly, Mineral Glow’s Gatsby Blue.
