There’s a lot of talk about sustainability and we know that its important but many of us are not sure about how to adopt it into our everyday lives. Broadcaster and architect Declan O’Donnell shares his top tips.
Declan has teamed up with Mairead Ronan to support Bord na Móna’s #SustainabilityHeroes which has launched a series of helpful video tips to inspire us all to live a more sustainable life, conserving energy and reducing waste.
The idea is to share tips and invite viewers to join in on the conversation, sharing their tips and encouraging us all to get outside into nature to grow our own fruit and veg, to make the most of whats on offer in our green isle. But before we get into all of that – what is sustainability?

Declan explains sustainability from an architects point of view and highlights its importance: "The thing about sustainability is everybody thinks its a bolt on at the end of a project, putting solar panels on the roof but it goes way, way deeper than that.
"It's something you should be thinking about at the early stages of the design process if you're building or extending.
Even if you've already built a house, your own house, its all about the small changes you can make.
From composting at home, to reducing packaging, from growing-your-own, to most environmentally-friendly fuel, we know a lot more about sustainable living that we think.
Declan added: "We all have a responsibility to live a greener lifestyle, to do our bit for the environment and certainly with ...this campaign, that's what its all about, if focuses on the small things that you and I can do everyday in our own homes to make ourselves more comfortable, at the end of the day.
"Simple things like looking at our thermostats and making sure they're at the right level. Focusing on buildings and looking at insulation and windows, replacing and upgrading these.
It's not just the aesthetic side of it, in terms of it looking lovely but its actually about how comfortable you're going to be because they're going to perform way better, you'e going to be warmer, you're going to lose less heat, you're going to spend less money as well."
Sustainability is something everyone needs to be thinking about all of the time.
Orla Kane Strategy Planning, Corporate Social Responsibility and Marketing Manager at Bord na Móna added: "...we are committed to leading the change to a more sustainable, naturally driven future."
"...we want to offer some practical tips on how everyone can play their part to live a little more sustainably at home and celebrate the #SustainabilityHeroes who have made big strides to become more sustainable and minimise their footprint."
Because when everyone is playing their part, small things can be heroic’.
Meanwhile Declan has been busy, as always, on the day job as owner/architect with ODKM and with another exciting new project...
